Housing grant for homeless vets

May
1

Military.com is reporting that the VA and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or HUD, have announced a $75 million grant to provide permanent housing for about 10,000 veterans nationwide.
That should be welcome news for veterans. The VA says that at least a third of the country’s homeless population has served in the military at one point or the other. An estimated 154,000 are homeless on any given night, the VA says, and twice that number experience homelessness at some time during the year. Those are scary numbers, and anything the government can do to help is great.
As part of the grant, HUD’s Veteran’s Affairs Supporting Housing Program will give local public housing agencies approximately 10,000 rental assistance vouchers specifically to help homeless veterans in their area.
New York City and Los Angeles are expected to get the largest number of vouchers, the report says.
