Nicole NerouliasNicole Neroulias grew up in Briarcliff Manor, NY, and graduated from Cornell University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. In November 2007, she traveled with her father, retired Col. Andonios Neroulias, to Vietnam with a group of other veterans from the Lower Hudson Valley, an experience she chronicled in The Journal News’ Return to Vietnam series. Nicole previously covered religion and city news in Cyprus, Connecticut and California, where she earned several fellowships and prizes, including a national Religion Newswriters Association award. She joined The Journal News in early 2007 and also teaches journalism at Columbia.

Veterans museum opening tonight in Putnam County

New Journal News databases make it easier to remember fallen troops

The Journal News has just created two databases that keep the Memorial Day spirit alive all year long, by enabling readers to find information about members of the American armed forces killed in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan.

New Rochelle's Memorial Day parade returns after 7-year hiatus

After a seven-year hiatus, New Rochelle will observe Memorial Day with a parade this year, stepping off at 10:30 a.m. Monday, from Memorial Plaza to Hudson Park.

Darryl Strawberry makes Army buddies at alcohol rehab center opening

At yesterday's opening of the Smithers Alcoholism Treatment and Training Center at St. John's Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, former Mets and Yankees baseball slugger Darryl Strawberry mingled with other recovering alcoholics, hospital officials and several uniformed Army officers who were there to support the center's plans to reach out to veterans.

Playland invites local veterans, families to Appreciation Day this weekend

Nonprofit audiobook organization expands efforts for blind, dyslexic veterans

Fleet Week NY starts tomorrow, bringing Navy, Marines, Coast Guard to NYC

West Point may make school's songs more gender-neutral

Last week, the Associated Press reported that Lt. Gen. Franklin "Buster" Hagenbeck, head of the U.S. Military Academy, wants to make two traditional West Point songs more gender-neutral.

Queens fitness club offers free yoga classes for veterans

Can stressed-out veterans go from "hooah!" to "om?" Apparently so, according to a new partnership between New York Sports Clubs and the Queens Vet Center, which provides free yoga classes for veterans at the Glendale gym in Queens.

Memorial Day spirit arrives early, stays late in Yonkers

New York energy project sets aside jobs for disabled veterans

New York Regional Interconnect Inc., the proposed 190-mile transmission line to bring electrical energy from upstate to our region, has made an agreement with the National Disabled Veterans Business Council to set aside at least 10 construction-related subcontracts for the nonprofit agency's members.

"At Ease!" is a place for Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine and Coast Guard veterans to share their experiences and voice their opinions. It doesn't matter if you served during war or peacetime, overseas or stateside, active duty or reserves, as a draftee or volunteer - if you served in uniform, this is the place for you.

We'll let you know about interesting military and veterans stories we find, issues that might affect you, and local veterans events you might want to attend.

KatieRich Liebson is a "military brat" who grew up on bases in the U.S. and Germany during his father's 23-year career as an Air Force enlisted man. Rich enlisted in the Army in 1976 and until his discharge in 1980 was assigned to the 78th Engineer Battalion in Ettlingen, Germany, as a public information specialist and translator. He's been a reporter at The Journal News and its forerunner, the Reporter Dispatch, for more than 20 years. During that time he's covered a variety of beats and has written frequently about veterans and veterans issues.
HemaHema Easley was born and raised in India, where she worked as a reporter for The Associated Press and United Press International. While in India she wrote about the insurgency in Indian-controlled Kashmir and covered the 1999 India-Pakistan conflict in the mountains of Kashmir. She joined The Journal News in 2002. She has covered municipal government in Westchester and now covers on social services in Rockland as well as military issues.
