I’ll be on vacation until Sept. 2, so loyal At Ease! readers will have to carry on without me until then.
Coincidentally, Sept. 2 is the anniversary of the formal surrender ceremony of Japanese forces, marking the official end of World War II.
Even more coincidentally, today is the anniversary of the actual Japanese surrender, known as VJ Day.
Anyone with memories of either day, whether you were in the service at the time or remember what was going on around these parts when the news was announced, I’d love to read about it here when I get back.

I have some more sad news. Jack Vier, of Rye, whose photo is pictured at the top of the blog, passed away suddenly on August 14. He was a fixture in Rye City, and had lately come to the middle and high schools to share his experiences with kids who have not gotten familiar with WWII and the people who fought it. Jack landed at Utah Beach on D-Day with the 4th Infantry Division. He was a hero by anyone’s definition having been awarded three purple hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. Although he was frail, he was kind enough to come to funeral home in June for my father, with whom he attended White Plains High School. I am sure they are back together, swapping stories.
