No man left behind

My colleague Steve Lieberman is working on a story about members of the Marine Corps League in Rockland County making arrangements for a homeless Vietnam veteran to receive a military funeral at Frederick W. Loescher Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Saturday morning.
The skeletal remains of Robert Hewett, 57, were found June 12 in Montebello. The Vietnam veteran had been living in the woods for about 15 years.
The 340-member Marine Corps League detachment got involved to honor a veteran and uphold the Marine creed of “no man left behind,’’ commander Rocco A. Marino said.
Good job, Marines. May Hewett rest in peace.
Read Lieberman’s early report here, or look for the complete story tomorrow at lohud.com or in The Journal News.

Thank you.
I would like more information about the phrase “No Man Left Behind.” What branch of the service initiated this saying? Do all branches use it? What is the history?
Thank you.
Great article.
