Stephen Barry of Building Homes for Heroes just called me to tell me about a fundraiser the agency is doing this weekened to raise money for injured Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
It’s a 5 K walk that will be held at Rockland Lake on Sunday, June 15, at 8:30 a.m. All money will go to build homes for veterans who have been injured in the ongoing wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and are homeless.
Prior to Sunday’s event, J.R. Martinez, a veteran from Atlanta, GA, will be speaking to North Rockland High School students at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, telling them his life story and how people can rise above their adversity and contribute to society. He was trapped in a burning humvee in Iraq, and spent two years in a hospital bed, recovering. He is now an advocate for severely wounded men and women of the armed forces. He is the 2008 Heroes Run honoree and will be part of Sunday’s walk.
