Memorial Day spirit arrives early, stays late in Yonkers

The City of Yonkers Annual Memorial Day Parade, the start of a slate of municipal activitiesyonkersmemorialday.jpg aimed at honoring veterans over the next six weeks, will step off this Sunday at 2 p.m. at South Broadway and Radford Streets, following an 11 a.m. ceremony at the Veterans Memorial at 40 S. Broadway.

It’s only fitting that the largest city in our region also has the longest list of upcoming veterans appreciation events. Here’s a rundown of the offerings through the end of June:

— May 15 – Homefield House, 6th and 10th Ward Ceremony, 6 p.m. Sponsored by the Homefield House, Donald Conrad Post 1954, Frank Rea Post 1163 and the Ernest Pasqua Post 1506. Location: Homefield House, 911 Saw Mill River Rd.

— May 15 – Oratorical Contest, 7 p.m. – Selecting the high school students that best recites the Gettysburg Address. Lenoir Estate (intersection of North Broadway and Executive Blvd.)

— May 16 – 7th Ward Memorial Service, 6 p.m. Sponsored by the Armando Rauso, AMVETS Post 40. March from 178 Waverly St. to the War Monument on Park Hill Ave., for a brief ceremony (Park Hill Ave. just east of Main St.)

— May 18 – City of Yonkers Memorial Day Parade, 11 a.m. – Memorial Day Ceremony in front of City Hall at the Veterans Memorial. 2 p.m. – Parade starts at South Broadway and Radford St.

— May 22 – Memorial Parade, 6:15 p.m. Parade from Donna Walshin Community Center, 219 Ridge Ave. to Lennon Park on Lake Ave. honors those men from 3rd and 6th wards that gave their lives for our country. 914-423-9754

— May 26 – Memorial Day Breakfast, 9 a.m. Sponsored by the Alan F. Waite Post, Amackassin Club, 557 Palisade Ave. 914-476-6460

— May 26 – Crestwood Memorial Day Parade – 10 a.m. The parade starts at Schultz Field, located at the intersection of St. Eleanora and Brosnan Place, and proceeds through Crestwood, to American Legion Plaza. 10:30 a.m. ceremony at American Legion Plaza, followed by refreshments.

— May 26 – Memorial Day Ceremony, 12 p.m. Sponsored by the Catholic Slovak Club at Victory Park corner of Lockwood Avenue and Gordon Street reception to follow at the Catholic Slovak Club. 914-969-1404

— May 26 – Memorial Day Services, 2 p.m. – Sponsored by the VFW EMPIRE POST 375, 10 Huber Place, Yonkers (Just north of Yonkers Ave and Central Avenue).

— May 30 – Traditional Memorial Day Parade, 6 p.m. Sponsored by Charles Bajart American Legion Post 1122, 840 McLean Ave. (quarter mile east of Central Ave and McLean Ave.) reception to follow at the Bajart Post.

— June 6 – Annual Military Ball & Awards Ceremony, 7 p.m. Sponsored by Roosevelt High School Air Force ROTC at the Ukrainian Youth Center, 301 Palisade Ave. Tickets: $25 per person. 914-337-3893

— June 13 – Flag Day Ceremony, 8:30 a.m. at the Plaza behind City Hall.

— June 13 – “Color it Proud” 6 p.m. – Saunders High School. Over 150 grade school children receive trophies and American flags for their winning entries, and the Yonkers Central Committee of Veterans presents the Americanism Award.

— June 29 – Korean War Memorial Ceremony, 11 a.m. on Palmer Road, Salvatore Sialiano Park.

— June 29 – Veterans Appreciation Day, 12 – 4 p.m. Redmond Field. Tickets are free and available after June 1 through your local veterans post or the City of Yonkers Dept of Veterans Service. Bring your own chairs.

KatieRich Liebson is a "military brat" who grew up on bases in the U.S. and Germany during his father's 23-year career as an Air Force enlisted man. Rich enlisted in the Army in 1976 and until his discharge in 1980 was assigned to the 78th Engineer Battalion in Ettlingen, Germany, as a public information specialist and translator. He's been a reporter at The Journal News and its forerunner, the Reporter Dispatch, for more than 20 years. During that time he's covered a variety of beats and has written frequently about veterans and veterans issues.
HemaHema Easley was born and raised in India, where she worked as a reporter for The Associated Press and United Press International. While in India she wrote about the insurgency in Indian-controlled Kashmir and covered the 1999 India-Pakistan conflict in the mountains of Kashmir. She joined The Journal News in 2002. She has covered municipal government in Westchester and now covers on social services in Rockland as well as military issues.
