New York energy project sets aside jobs for disabled veterans

May

New York Regional Interconnect Inc., the proposed 190-mile transmission line to bring electrical energy from upstate to our region, has made an agreement with the National Disabled Veterans Business Council to set aside at least 10 construction-related subcontracts for the nonprofit agency’s members.

According to the press release, NYRI president Chris Thompson said the partnership is a win-win situation:

By supporting our highly skilled service-disabled veterans with real jobs after they return home from the front lines, this partnership enables us to invest in our veterans and their communities while stimulating the economic development of New York.

NYRI has also pledged to fund a $5,000 annual scholarship program to provide education and professional development for vets affiliated with the National Disabled Veterans Business Council.

    BRAVO!!

No one along the route wants the NYRI project built. It's an expensive project ($2.1 billion) that will cause a lot of impacts.

NYRI is a Canadian-based company with many unknown investors. They have treated the local governments and property owners with contempt and disrespect. They are proposing towers equivalent to 10-13 story-buildings along river valleys.

Did anyone from the the National Disabled Veterans Business Council look into the details of this project and do some research on NYRI before signing the agreement? Did they actually visit the project site (all 200 miles of it along beautiful rural rolling hills?). I suspect not.

Do you think the commitment of reserved jobs (10 jobs for 3 years) is anything more than a PR ploy?
