Brainstorming ideas for Davids Island, formerly Fort Slocum, in New Rochelle

My colleague Gerald McKinstry has a story in today’s Journal News about Fort Slocum, a military base used from the Civil War until its
deactivation in 1965.
In contrast to the debate over razing the New Rochelle Armory to make room for a specific waterfront development, McKinstry reports that officials do not yet know the future of Davids Island. Some residents have suggested putting wind turbines for alternative energy on the property, or building a par-3 golf course, restaurants and other commercial attractions.
But first, the remaining buildings and water tower will be demolished and environmental hazards must be remediated. The state Department of Environmental Conservation, Army Corps of Engineers, the city and Westchester County are in the midst of a site investigation to determine what hazards exist on the property; millions of state and federal funds have been committed to the clean-up.
In contrast to the New Rochelle Armory debate, we haven’t heard much from local veterans about the demolition of the buildings on Davids Island, or possible commercial uses down the road. Check out McKinstry’s story, and comment on this post.
