Celebrating Military Appreciation Month, from Silver Star Day to Memorial Day

May
1

May 1 is Silver Star Day, an occasion to honor wounded and ill veterans and to kick off Military Appreciation Month.

The Silver Starsilverstar2.jpg Families of America, an organization honoring wounded veterans, reports it has received proclamations from 44 states (including New York), Washington D.C. and more than 80 cities observing Silver Star Day today. According to the group’s press release:

The tradition of the Silver Star banner for the wounded and ill goes back to 1917 and lasted for years until it faded into history. Silver Star Families of America brought back this tradition so that every time someone sees a Silver Star banner in a window or a Silver Star flag flying, they remember the sacrifice of wounded service members.

The Silver Star Service banner and flag fly at military hospitals, Department of Veterans Affairs medical facilities and combat support hospitals.

In the Lower Hudson Valley, preparations are also underway for Memorial Day parades in Congers, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, Nyack, Pearl River, White Plains and other municipalities. Anyone planning on volunteering or participating in New Rochelle’s parade is asked to attend a 7 p.m. May 8 meeting at Post 8, 112 North Ave.

Let us know of any other planning sessions for other Memorial Day events; we can publicize them on this blog.

It is odd that a picture of the Silver Star is included in this blog. The Silver Star Medal has nothing to do with being wounded. It is the nations third highest award for gallantry in action.

You're right – the "Silver Star" in the family organization and medal represent different things (wounded vs. gallantry). I've changed the image to the Silver Star banner. Thanks for letting us know.
