Better late than never? World War II vets get medals decades after service

April

Is it just me, or have there been a lot of Korean War and World War II veterans getting medals lately, decades after their meritorious service?

We have a story about one in today’s Journal News:peterson.jpg Ed Peterson, a Navy veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart yesterday, 64 years after losing much of his hearing when a kamikaze plane attacked his ship. The 82-year-old World War II veteran and Yonkers native was presented with the medal by Rep. Eliot Engel, D-Bronx, in a ceremony at Thorpe Village; his wife, Mona Peterson, did the honors.

Apparently, Peterson hadn’t pursued the missing medal until he was inspired to do so while going through his other decorations and mementos last year.

If you or a veteran you know wants to claim a medal, go to www.veterans.state.ny.us or call the state Division of Veterans Affairs at 1-888-838-7697.

This is a common problem even today. I was pined an award I never recieved orders fo so I cannot wear it. When Vets get home they want to leave it all behind once they come to grips with it they start looking for things that they deserve and may help them get closure.
