I was seven years old when my dad was sent to Vietnam in 1965 and didn’t take me with him. He was stationed atĀ Niagara Falls Air Base and used to take me to the flight line all the time. I couldn’t understand why he wouldn’t let me go to Vietnam too.
It’s always tough on military families when a husband, wife, mom or dad is deployed, especially for younger kids. That’s why Sesame Workshop, the non-profit organization behind Sesame Street, has teamed up with a number of government, non-profit and corporate entities to develop “Talk, Listen, Connect: Deployments Homecomings, Changes,” an outreach program designed to provide support and resources for military families with young children.
Launched in 2006, the program is being updated, with input from the New York State Office of Mental Health. The plan is to produceĀ 500,000 multimedia outreach kits to include DVDs for youngsters along with coloring books, postcards and other materials designed to help young kids deal with their military parent’s absence. Material for adults will also be included . Find out more by visiting the Sesame website.
