Woodruff, Dozier win Peabody Awards for telling wounded Iraq veterans' stories

ABC News correspondent (and Rye, NY resident) Bob Woodruff and CBS News correspondent Kimberly Dozier, journalists who survived near-fatal attacks while on assignment in Iraq, each won a Peabody Award this week for telling stories about wounded war veterans.

The annual awards recognize broadcasting excellence in news and entertainment – basically, the medium’s version of the Pulitzer Prizes or Oscars.

woodruff.jpgWoodruff won for “Wounds of War — The Long Road Home for Our Nation’s Veterans,” a series examining traumatic brain injuries – like his own – suffered by Iraq war veterans and how they and their families adapt to their disabilities. Dozier won for “CBS News Sunday Morning: The Way Home,” a piece about two women veterans who lost limbs in Iraq.

The wounded war journalists were among 35 recipients announced by the University of Georgia’s Grady College this week. (On the entertainment side this year, winners include “The Colbert Report” and “30 Rock.”) The Peabodys will be officially awarded at a ceremony in New York City on June 16, hosted by NBC news anchor Brian Williams.
